Description

Travel back in time through stories, food, and music to experience what daily life tasted like during Bulgaria’s communist era. Enjoy a 90 minutes dinner in a local home in Sofia, hosted by a young Bulgarian in an authentic 1980s military uniform. Feel welcomed to enter one cosy family home, where you can experience what communist cuisine tasted like. Choose between tarator, a cold cucumber and yogurt soup with dill, or shopska salad, Bulgaria’s national salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese, and peppers. For the main course, savor two grilled kebapches (spiced minced meat) served with lyutenitsa, a delicious red pepper spread. Finish with Bulgarian yogurt with sugar, the way it was served in every home, and homemade sourdough bread. Choose between retro Bulgarian beer, boutique local wine, or lemonade. All food is freshly made in a family kitchen. Don't worry! Our portions will be more generous than portions were back then. :) Learn about what it was like to eat, shop, and cook during communism, family traditions, social rituals, how food was preserved and shared, the role of homemade wine and rakia, and what “luxury” meant in the 80s in Bulgaria. Vintage music will play in the background, with radio voices and nostalgic ballads. You’ll be welcomed at 22 Zlaten Rog Street at 17:45, where a member of our family will meet you and guide you to the nearby apartment. Following an old communist tradition, the dinner will already be served and waiting on the table – no need to wait in lines this time! If you’re running late, don’t worry – just give us a quick call and we’ll come meet you. Your lunch will still be waiting for you, just like in a true Bulgarian home.
