Preobrazhenski Monastery
Bulgaria
Preobrazhenski Monastery or The Monastery of the Holy Transfiguration of God is an active male monastery close to Veliko Tarnovo. The distance from Tsarevets is about 10 km and less than 6 from the outskirts of Veliko Tarnovo. It is a pleasant picturesque trail and can be easily walked within less than 2 hours yet we strongly recommend you find someone local to lead the way in order to avoid getting lost in the woods. Alternatively, you can reach the monastery by car, just follow the signs on the Veliko Tarnovo - Ruse road. Preobrazhenski Monastery was built in an awesome scenic spot on the left bank of the Yantra river sheltered by the steep mountain rocks of Stara Planina. A magnificent view of the river gorge is revealed from the monastery yard and you can see another active monastery, the Holy Trinity convent, just across the river. Preobrazhenski Monastery is famous mainly for its key role in the Bulgarian history and for its abundant frescos. While there do not miss the 'Wheel of Life' mural on the outside Church wall - this masterpiece of Bulgarian revival art is a sophisticated contemplation on the transience of human life. As is the case with all active monasteries, churches and temples, you will have to observe the dress code in order to get in - wear clothes that cover your shoulders, legs and arms and ladies, have a scarf handy to cover your head.
Preobrazhenski Monastery does not offer any accommodation and dining options, but you can find a good number of hotels and restaurants in the nearby Veliko Tarnovo and Arbanasi.
