Nicopolis ad Istrum is an ancient Roman city the remains of which can be seen just off the main E85 Veliko Turnovo to Ruse road. The closest settlement is the village of Nikyup, 3.5 km from the site. There are no public transport connections. Nicopolis ad Istrum is open for visitors from 9 am till 6pm April-October and from 10 am till 4 pm November-March with a free admission each last Thursday of the month. Otherwise entrance fee is 6 leva with discounts for families, students and disabled. Tours of the site are unguided. If you wish to get a guide or an information talk, these should be required and arranged in advance through Veliko Tarnovo Regional Museum. Nicopolis ad Istrum is not only an important Bulgarian historical landmark, it is also an active archaeological site and has been recently a part of a bigger preservation and accessibility project.
The closest bigger town of Veliko Tarnovo is only 23 km away and offers a good number of hotels and restaurants as well as numerous historical and cultural sights and attractions.
