Description

The sites feature extensive artistic heritage including frescoes, carvings, and ancient monuments. The museum complex at Rila Monastery houses around 3,500 unique exhibits such as nearly 300 manuscripts and 9,000 printed and graphic publications from the 11th to 19th centuries.
Within the museum grounds are relics of St. Ivan Rilski, the monastery’s founder and Bulgaria’s patron saint, as well as the icon of the Most Holy Mother of God Osenovitsa and relics of 32 early Christian saints. The Boyana Church near Sofia, built in the 10th century, preserves the Byzantine-Balkan Renaissance spirit and contains the 13th-century portrait known as the Bulgarian Mona Lisa, depicting boilie Desislava.
