Erected during the dawn of Christianity, it served as a vital bastion and cultural nucleus in antiquity and the early Byzantine era. Archaeological discoveries on the hill of St. Spas chronicle five distinct phases, spanning from the early Iron Age to the Byzantine period, showcasing Thracian cult pits, a Roman fortress adorned with towers, and an early Christian church. The site was strategically chosen to oversee crucial ancient routes and treasures such as mineral springs and mines. The ancient stronghold of “Tsari Mali Grad” hosts exhibitions of prehistoric relics, ceramics, numismatics, and military reenactments, painting a vivid picture of life and culture in late antiquity. By the IV century, the hill of St. Spas transformed into an essential Christian center, as illustrated by the early Christian baptistery nestled in the northern pastophorium’s apse. As part of the illustrious E4 route, it invites explorers along eco-trails bearing remnants of the Roman era. Whispers of a grand ancient settlement, known as “Tsari Mali Grad,” linger in the air, supposedly translating to “Little Tsarigrad” (the ancient name for Constantinople). Until the XIX century, fragments of the white stone walls and towers still graced the fortress, a poignant reminder of Tsari Grad for the local inhabitants.
