Description
Veliko Tarnovo, located in north-central Bulgaria on the Yantra River, served as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1396). The city is known for its medieval architecture, centered around three hills: Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, and Sveta Gora. Tsarevets hill houses the Bulgarian emperors' palaces, the Patriarchal Cathedral, and fortified administrative and residential buildings.
Trapezitsa was traditionally the residence of the nobility and is notable for its many churches. During the Middle Ages, Veliko Tarnovo was a significant cultural center, lending its name to the Tarnovo Artistic School, which influenced architecture, painting, and literature.
Nearby, the village of Arbanassi stands on a high terrace overlooking Veliko Tarnovo and the fortress. It features numerous historical monuments, including 17th- and 18th-century churches and examples of Bulgarian National Revival architecture.
The tour begins at 8:30 AM with pickup from your Sofia accommodation. Upon arrival in Veliko Tarnovo, you will enjoy views and photos of the fortress, followed by a climb to Baldwin's Tower and the Patriarchal Church of Tsarevets. On the return route, you will see the Assen's Dynasty Monument and stroll along Samovodska Charshia Street, where souvenirs are available for purchase.
Before returning to Sofia, the tour includes a visit to the oldest church in Arbanassi, the Nativity of Christ, famous for its 1632 frescoes depicting the life of St. John the Baptist and the zodiac wheel.
