Description

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Plovdiv at 08:00 to begin the journey through the East Rhodope region. The first stop is Perperikon, one of Bulgaria’s largest and most important archaeological sites. Dating from the 5th century BC to the medieval period, Perperikon features a palace complex, sanctuary, and fortress. It served as a political, economic, and religious center for the ancient Thracians and later was a Byzantine military fortress. Explore impressive stone structures including a large hall, tower, and courtyard, along with a sanctuary used for mystical rituals.

After Perperikon, the tour continues north toward Haskovo. Here you will break for lunch in the city center and see the Virgin Mary statue, certified by Guinness World Records as the tallest statue of the Virgin Mary with Infant Jesus globally. The statue honors Haskovo’s patron saint. Nearby is the Church of the Holy Mother of God, a Bulgarian National Revival-era cathedral built between 1832 and 1837.

The journey proceeds to Uzundzhovo, where you will visit a medieval mosque once serving a major Ottoman trade fair. Converted into an Orthodox church in the early 20th century, it retains remnants of the adjacent Caravanserai, offering insight into the area's multicultural history.

The final stop is the Thracian Tomb of Alexandrovo, a rock-cut burial site dating from the 3rd or 2nd century BC. Famous for its well-preserved frescoes depicting daily life and religious ceremonies, this tomb is a prime example of Thracian art and culture.

After visiting the tomb, the tour returns to Plovdiv with drop-off at your hotel.
