Description
Nis, a city with Roman origins and the birthplace of Constantine the Great, offers multiple archaeological and historical sites. This tour includes a scenic drive from Sofia to Nis, where you’ll start at the Skull Tower, a unique monument built from the skulls of fallen Serbian revolutionaries during Ottoman rule.
Next, visit Medijana, a suburban archaeological complex showcasing remains of Roman villas, granaries, baths, and a museum exhibiting sculptures, portraits, and everyday Roman artifacts.
In the city, you’ll see the Nis Fortress with excavated Roman areas, and explore archaeological findings from 6000 BC in the town’s hall. Note that the Royal Villa of Constantine the Great in Medijana is temporarily closed for restoration.
Enjoy free time to walk around Nis’s central square. Choose to try the Serbian grill in a traditional restaurant, which accepts card payments and offers vegetarian and vegan options, or sample Serbian street food.
After lunch, visit the site of a small German concentration camp from World War II, used to imprison and exterminate Jews, Roma, and other minorities.
The return trip begins at 16:00, arriving back in Sofia around 18:30.
