Description
This day tour covers two of Bulgaria's significant caves—Devetashkata Cave and Saevata Dupka—and the Krushuna Waterfalls. Situated at the foot of the Stara Planina (Balkans), this itinerary offers a blend of paleolithic cave history and natural water cascades.
Krushuna Waterfalls are known for their blue pools and lush greenery on the Devetashka plateau. The cascade forms along the Proynovska River, originating from the Krushuna Cave. The entire Devetashka plateau features numerous karst formations and caves.
Devetashka Cave, near Devetaki village in Lovech municipality, is one of Bulgaria’s largest caves. It spans 2,442 meters in length, covers 20,400 m², and reaches 60 meters in height. Its giant entrance arches create a dinosaur-era panorama. Archaeological finds include a 5th-century BC bronze artifact and Neolithic remains. The cave shelters 12 protected bat species and amphibians, including Red Book-listed species.
Saevata Dupka Cave, discovered by two shepherd brothers during Ottoman rule, is close to Bulgaria’s northern highway linking Sofia and Varna. It is considered one of the country’s most beautiful caves, featuring a 60-meter circumference stalactite. The cave maintains an average temperature of 7–11 °C with humidity between 90% and 98%. It extends 205 meters, with an underground river flowing 70 meters beneath the surface. Its estimated age is around 3 million years. The cave’s interior displays green, brown, and white hues with formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, and dendrites.
