Immerse yourself in the wild beauty of the Balkan Mountains on this unforgettable 2-day hiking adventure to Botev Peak (2,376 m) — the highest summit in the entire Balkan range. This journey takes you deep into the heart of Bulgaria’s most dramatic mountain landscape, combining pristine ancient forests, thundering waterfalls, and sweeping panoramic views. Starting from the charming Bulgarian Revival town of Kalofer, trek through the protected Yuzhen Dzhendem Nature Reserve, a true paradise for nature lovers. Day 1: Kalofer → Rai Hut (Paradise Hut) Begin your adventure in Kalofer, a picturesque historic town nestled at the foot of the mountains. From here, gradually ascend through magnificent old-growth beech forests, where towering trees create a cathedral-like atmosphere. The trail winds upward, revealing the raw power and serenity of the Balkans. Reach the cozy Rai Mountain Hut (literally meaning “Paradise” in Bulgarian), your home for the night. Located at a stunning position just below the Rai Waterfall — at 124 meters, the highest waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula — fall asleep to the powerful roar of cascading water. The evening offers a peaceful, authentic mountain experience under a sky full of stars. Day 2: Summit Day – Botev Peak & Return Early in the morning, begin the final ascent to the majestic Botev Peak (2,376 m). The climb rewards you with increasingly spectacular views. At the summit, on a clear day, see the entire spine of the Balkan Mountains stretching before you, with the famous Rose Valley unfolding beautifully to the south — a breathtaking sea of green and (in season) pink. After celebrating your achievement at the highest point of the Balkans, descend via a different scenic trail, enjoying new perspectives of the rugged ridges and deep valleys before returning to Kalofer.
