Description
Begin your adventure with a visit to the Devil’s Throat Cave, located in the western part of the Rhodope Mountains. This cave is connected to many mystical legends and is home to the largest waterfall inside a cave on the Balkan Peninsula. According to legend, Orpheus, the legendary Thracian singer, attempted to retrieve his beloved Eurydice from Hades in the Underworld here.
Next, head to Yagodinska Cave, which is 10,500 meters long and has three levels. Only one of them, about 1,100 meters long in the lowest level, was electrified in 1971–1982 and opened for tourists. The entrance and the exit for that level are artificial tunnels with a length of 150 and 80 meters respectively. The altitude of the entrance and the exit is 930 meters and 937 meters respectively. The temperature in the cave is constant all year round at 6°C; the humidity is 85%–91%.
