Description
Plovdiv is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities globally, with settlements dating back to the 6th millennium BCE. Initially home to Neolithic communities and Thracian settlements, the city flourished during Roman times as a major provincial center with monumental buildings, wide streets, and public baths.
Key archaeological layers remain visible today. The Ancient Roman Theater is among the best-preserved worldwide and still hosts events. The Roman Stadium ruins lie beneath the modern center, partially exposed along the main pedestrian street. The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis features vibrant early Christian mosaics, offering insight into Late Antique religious art.
The Old Town showcases traditional Bulgarian Revival houses with painted façades and wooden interiors from the 18th–19th centuries. The Regional Ethnographic Museum displays local costumes, crafts, musical instruments, and scenes of everyday life.
Kapana, Plovdiv’s creative district, was formerly a craftsmen’s quarter and now offers narrow streets filled with cafés, artisan shops, street art, galleries, and bars.
