Opened in 1981, the monument is built in a communist art style that is huge and impressive, and also considered by many to be extremely strange. After the monument the tour continues to Madara, a small village nearby. Here you can see the UNESCO World Heritage Madara Rider, a rock relief carved into a cliff face. The relief depicts typical riders from Asian nomad states, and the only example in Europe of such a carving from the early medieval era.
