Description
Depart from Sofia to the Rila Mountains for a moderately challenging hike through the 7 Rila Lakes area. After a 90-minute transfer, board a chairlift from Panichishte to the Rila Lakes hut, the start of your trek. The 7 Rila Lakes sit between 2,100 and 2,500 meters altitude and are a group of glacial lakes surrounded by steep peaks and valleys.
The trail passes The Eye, The Tear, The Kidney, The Twins, The Trefoil, The Fish Lake, and The Lower Lake. Depending on your fitness, the guide can adjust the route to be easier or more demanding. Upon completing the lake trek, continue by car for about 90 minutes to the Rila Monastery, an important Bulgarian Orthodox site.
Explore the monastery’s 65-foot walls, including the 14th-century Hrelyo Tower, the domed Birth of the Blessed Virgin Church, and the original 19th-century monastery kitchen. The monastery museum houses manuscripts, icons, ethnographic exhibits, and a library with over 16,000 books.
