Experience a rigorous winter expedition in the Rila Mountains, visiting one of Bulgaria’s most remarkable natural sites—the Seven Rila Lakes. This tour requires high-quality waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking boots due to frequent knee-deep snow and volatile mountain weather.
The itinerary is subject to the guide’s discretion to ensure group safety. If strong winds close the chairlift, the hike will be limited to lower lakes or a mountain hut for rest and meals. The lakes themselves will be hidden under ice and snow, offering a winter landscape rather than visible water.
Seasonal variations affect the route and duration. When the chairlift is closed for maintenance, the hike extends by two hours with increased difficulty, requiring good physical fitness. In winter and spring, lake visibility is minimal due to snow coverage.
The Seven Rila Lakes lie between 2,100 and 2,500 meters above sea level, encircled by rugged peaks and deep valleys. After a 90-minute drive from Sofia, the tour begins at Panichishte resort, where the chairlift (if operational) takes you to the Rila Lakes mountain hut. From there, you hike to see the Eye, the Tear, the Kidney, the Twins, the Trefoil, the Fish Lake, and the Lower Lake.
