Skopje Day Trip from Sofia: History and City Tour
This full-day tour from Sofia visits Skopje, North Macedonia’s capital, offering a guided exploration of historic sites and the old city.
Description
Skopje’s history began with Thracian settlements and the fortress of Scupi. Over centuries, it belonged to Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Serbian rulers. The Ottomans conquered Skopje in 1392, renaming it Uskub, making it home to Ottomans, Bulgarians, and Albanians.
In 1912, the city was liberated in the First Balkan War and became part of Serbia. It later changed hands during the world wars, briefly coming under Bulgarian control, before becoming the capital of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia within Yugoslavia. Skopje industrialized rapidly until a major earthquake in 1963 devastated much of the city, leaving over 100,000 people homeless. The city recovered and is now the capital of independent North Macedonia.
