Description

Kazanlak lies in central Bulgaria within the Valley of Roses and the Valley of the Thracian Kings. The oldest settlement dates back to the Neolithic era (6th–5th millennium B.C.). In the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C., Thracian ruler Seuthes III played a key role in the region's history during the Hellenistic period. The ancient city of Seuthopolis was located nearby and uncovered during construction of the Koprinka Reservoir.

Kazanlak is Bulgaria’s rose oil production center. The local Rosa Damascena is mainstream in the global cosmetic industry, grown chiefly here in the world’s largest rose gardens. Bulgaria is the leading supplier of rose oil internationally.

The tour begins with an approximate 3-hour scenic drive from Sofia along the Balkan range. It starts at Shipka Memorial Church, built after 1878 to honor Russian and Bulgarian soldiers. Then head to the tomb of Seuthes III at Goliama Kosmatka. After lunch nearby, visit the UNESCO-protected tomb near Kazanlak, famous for its 4th-century B.C. murals depicting a couple's farewell gesture.

Return stops include a rose garden and distillery where rose essence is extracted. Guests can also purchase rose-scented souvenirs. Expect to return to Sofia by approximately 18:30. Note that the tour has a fast pace.
