Description

Experience a full-day escape to the Rila Mountains featuring Bulgaria’s iconic Rila Monastery. The tour includes a guided visit to the monastery, renowned for its 10th-century architecture, frescoes by Zahari Zograf, and tranquil mountain setting.

If you select the extended option, you will hike approximately 30 minutes round-trip to the Cave of St. Ivan Rilski via a moderate forest trail. The path can be slippery depending on the season, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Note that access to the cave is only available on specific tour options.

During your visit to the monastery complex, admire the arcaded balconies, gold iconostasis, and vividly painted murals. Guides or audioguides share historical insights that bring the site to life. You will also have free time to explore independently, visit the monastery museum (entry fee approx. 8 BGN, not included), or shop for souvenirs.

Lunch is not included, but restaurants nearby serve traditional dishes such as mekitsi (fried dough with yoghurt) and grilled trout. Free time at the monastery may vary due to group size, traffic, or an additional stop at Boyana Church on some dates.

The local tour operator, Traventuria, holds a “Business Which Supports Biodiversity” certification from the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation for its “Tours with a Cause” program.
