Description
Start early from Sofia and head south through Bulgaria’s highest mountain ranges, Rila and Pirin. Your guide will share insights about the geography, conservation efforts, and Bulgaria’s economic changes from communism to today.
Your first stop is Melnik, a town with just 208 residents but a rich history centered on its Broad-Leaved Melnik Vine wines, historic tobacco, and wine trade. The town features Revival-era architecture, narrow cobbled streets, and iconic Melnik Sand Pyramids, natural rock formations carved by wind over thousands of years.
Visit the Kordopulov House to learn about traditional Bulgarian winemaking. This mansion houses an extensive underground wine cellar and showcases the country’s Revival architecture.
Next, ascend into the Rila Mountains to visit the Rila Monastery, founded in the 10th century by St. Ivan of Rila. This site is a key symbol of Bulgarian cultural and spiritual heritage, featuring towering frescoed walls, detailed wood carvings, and Renaissance-era domes. A guided tour covers the main church with its frescoes and the monastery museum, which holds religious artifacts and manuscripts. After the tour, enjoy free time for photos, personal exploration, or sampling traditional mekitsi with honey or jam.
