Description
Depart from Sofia city center and travel through the countryside and the Rila Mountains with an experienced local guide and an international group. The tour offers panoramic views and insights into Bulgaria’s history and Orthodox culture.
Your first stop is Rila Monastery, Bulgaria’s largest Eastern Orthodox monastery, founded in the 10th century. Known for its distinctive black-and-white arcades, colorful frescoes, and gold iconostasis, the monastery is surrounded by mountain landscapes. You can join a guided walking tour or explore independently, visit the monastery museum, photograph the surroundings, shop for souvenirs, or taste traditional Bulgarian dishes such as mekitsi and local yogurt.
Next, visit Boyana Church, a medieval UNESCO-listed site famous for its exceptionally preserved 13th-century frescoes. These artworks are significant examples of medieval European art and influenced Renaissance painting. The guide will explain the church’s history and the meaning behind the frescoes.
Note that Boyana Church entrance tickets are limited due to preservation rules and must be reserved in advance. A mandatory local entrance fee applies and is non-refundable. Please plan accordingly.
