Description
Begin your day with a comfortable drive from Bucharest towards Giurgiu, where you will cross the Danube River via the Friendship Bridge into Bulgaria, arriving in the city of Ruse. From here, continue your journey into the Bulgarian countryside. Make your first stop and visit one of Bulgaria’s remarkable rock monasteries (Ivanovo or Basarabovo), selected based on the best conditions for the day. These fascinating religious sites were carved by monks and hermits directly into the rock during medieval times. Have approximately 45 minutes to explore the area, step inside these unique spaces, and experience the atmosphere of solitude and devotion that once defined monastic life here. After visiting the monasteries, continue to the charming village of Arbanasi, known for its preserved traditional architecture and historical significance. Visit the Church of the Nativity, famous for its richly decorated interior covered in detailed frescoes, as well as the Konstantsaliev House, a well-preserved fortified residence that offers insight into the life of wealthy Bulgarian merchants from centuries ago. In Arbanasi, take a break for lunch at a local restaurant where you can enjoy traditional Bulgarian cuisine (not included). Next, head to Veliko Tarnovo, the former capital of the Bulgarian Empire and one of the most picturesque towns in the region. Built across hills and overlooking a river valley, the city offers impressive views and a rich historical atmosphere. Visit the Tsarevets Fortress, one of the most important landmarks in Bulgaria. Have free time to explore the fortress on your own, walk along its ancient walls, discover the remains of the royal complex, and take in panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Afterward, have time to stroll through the old town area, explore local shops, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. Throughout the day, benefit from a flexible itinerary, comfortable transportation, and the opportunity to experience both well-known landmarks and hidden cultural gems at your own pace.Includes
