Description

The Belogradchik massif features unusual sandstone and conglomerate rock formations on the western Balkan Mountains' slopes. The rocks range in color from red to yellow and reach heights up to 200 meters. Many formations are named after people or objects they resemble and are linked to local legends. The Bulgarian government has designated the Belogradchik Rocks a Nature Landmark, making them a significant regional attraction.

Belogradchik Fortress lies 1.5 kilometers from the town of Belogradchik, nestled among the rock formations. Originally built by the Romans between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD, the fortress guarded important roads across the Balkan peninsula. The Romans constructed its highest section, known as The Citadel, to control the route from Ratsiaria (near today's village of Archar in the Vidin region).
