Description

Nis  Nis is a big city in Serbia. It has a very long history and important role in the events on the Balkans. Established by the Thracians, developed by the Romans as Nissus, and situated on Via Diagonalis road, the birthplace of Constantine the Great. The city had a Bulgarian, Ottoman, and finally a Serbian period. All of the stages are still visible and will put you in a time machine. The most important sights of Nis are Medijana, a Roman villa connected with Constantine's family, The Skull tower, built and decorated with human skulls by the Ottomans after an uprising against them, the fortress, and a Nazi concentration camp. Serbians are famous for their grilled meat.   Skopje Skopje is the capital of Macedonia and it is perfect place to see how history is used to create identity. The town has been inhabited since prehistorical times. It was a military Roman camp but its flourishing moments were as a Bulgarian kingdom. It was a Bulgarian capital between 972-992. After that it was part of the Byzantine empire and between 1081 and 1088 was conquered by the Normans. Now Skopje has a monumental new city center which combines the old with the new. The highlights that you will be able to visit are: The Medieval fortress, the old cozy streets, and the house museum of Mother Teresa.  Your 2 Day Balkan Journey:  Begin your tour at 8:00 am from Sofia with a relaxed scenic drive to the West along the Balkan range (Stara Planina or old mountain) to the Serbian-Bulgarian border and in about 2 hours you will reach the beautiful historic town of Nis. Explore the city's heritage and have lunch in some restaurant in the old center. After another stroll on the main street, continue the road trip to Macedonia and stay there overnight.  After a good breakfast the next morning  you will pay a visit to Skopje's center and highlights. After a nice lunch return to Sofia.
