A Bulgarian-Orthodox monastery near the city of Ruse, Basarbovo is the only active cave monastery in Bulgaria and has been a historical landmark since 1978. During your visit here learn about the monastery's history dating back to the 15th century and its association with St. Dimitar Basarbovski. After your monastery visit, head to Veliko Tarnovo. Also known as the 'City of Tsars,' Veliko Tarnovo is situated on the three hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, and Sveta Gora. See the town's old palaces, churches, and fortresses. Then head to the village of Arbanasi. Set on a high plateau, Arbanasi is known for its rich history and monuments. Visit 17th and 18th-century churches and see examples of Bulgarian National Revival architecture.
