Best Archaeology and Ethnography in Plovdiv

Local Recommendations from our My Guide Bulgaria team

They call them architectural reserves, ethnographic centers and complexes, open museums, traditional villages, old towns etc. and there are a lot of these in Bulgaria – cherished sanctuaries of past times and preserved traditions.

Quite a few Bulgarian municipalities have conserved and restored their 'old' towns or parts of them as tourist attractions. It is always fun to explore these cities within the cities, step back in time and see the world from a different perspective. The old towns in Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo and Nessebar are probably among the most popular, however, the less known 'old' Dobrich, Sozopol, Zlatograd, etc. are also worth visiting if you have the chance. Some smaller towns and villages have been conserved almost totally – see Koprivshtitsa, Bozhenci, Arbanasi, while the open museum of Etara for example, is a purpose built ethnographic complex where various exhibits and replicas of old time dwellings, workshops and technical equipment can be seen in action. Review our selection and pick the places you want to visit.
